Tucked away in the basement of the Detroit Athletic Club is a rare gem: an 8-lane bowling alley known as the largest private bowling league in the country, and the Bowling Abbey – a 70 seat restaurant for bowling leagues, members and guests. The transformation of the Bowling Abbey began in the area commonly known as “The Vault” – a private dining area in the former vault area of the restaurant. The goal was to energize the space as a multi-use lounge for various events beyond league functions. New carpet, a thorough cleaning of the original wood paneled walls, a (dark) coat of paint on the ceiling, new lounge furniture and lighting, gives the space the feel of an upscale lounge. The furniture has traditional lines reminiscent of the Club décor, but with timeless fabrics in solids and patterns. The color palette remains neutral: whites, blacks, and tans, soft gold metal accents, and a pop of color on throw pillows, all complimenting the beautiful oak paneled walls. Seating and occasional tables are custom built for lounging and dining and sized for the ultimate guest comfort and durability. Housing up to 20 guests comfortably, The Vault is now a sophisticated, multi-use lounge, with a balance of traditional and modern elements.
